Mzee Home Care Foundation is also commonly known as Mzee
Care is a voluntary, non-political, non-religious, and non-profit organization officially registered on August 20, 2018. Since its establishment in 2015, the foundation has been dedicated to enhancing the welfare and empowerment of older persons.

Mzee Home Care Foundation was founded by Joyce Mutamba, a dedicated and passionate young woman, as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) aimed at supporting elderly individuals in Kasana, Luweero, Uganda. Recognizing the growing need for elder support, Ms Joyce transformed the CBO into a registered NGO, establishing its headquarters in Luweero District, Uganda, to expand services and enhance the well-being of older persons in the community.

“Mzee,” a term from the Bantu language Swahili, refers to an elder person. In extended family setups, elder individuals tend to receive better care than those living alone. Caregiving roles typically fall on working-age women and grandchildren, who manage physical and emotional responsibilities, including domestic tasks and gardening. In contrast, working-age men are traditionally expected to provide financial support and maintain decision-making authority within the family.

The journey of  Ms Joyce Mutamba began with the challenges faced by their grandmother, who suffered from dementia. Her grandchildren, having been raised by her, struggled financially to afford her medical care and long-term healthcare needs. This painful experience highlighted a broader issue: many elderly individuals in Uganda face similar medical challenges. Recognizing the urgent need for financial, medical, and social support for this vulnerable population, they were inspired to take action.  Recognizing the unique challenges faced by the elderly in Uganda, Ms Joyce established Mzee, a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting their diverse needs, regardless of race, religion, or health status. Our commitment lies in providing a comprehensive range of services designed to enhance the well-being and quality of life for older individuals in our community.

We have partnered with specialized personnel to provide nursing
and homecare support services to elderly individuals and vulnerable children. Our organization actively advocates for their rights and represents their interests. We also facilitate fellowship activities, offer recreational facilities, implement sustainable projects, provide mental support, and promote spiritual development, all aimed at enhancing the holistic well-being of our beneficiaries.
